Visual Repetitiveness with Wordle

Experiencing great word repetitiveness research with Wordle. It’s amazing to see how valuable literature can formulate alternate visual interpretations based on repetitions.

Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text.

Relay for Life, American Cancer Society Fundraiser

I had the honor of being a part of the largest fundraising event in the country. Recently in Point Pleasant NJ hundreds of participants took part in a fundraiser supporting the American Cancer Society.

What is the relay for life?

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length.

Relay began in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon in Tacoma, Washington, ran and walked around a track for 24 hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Since then, Relay has grown from a single man’s passion to fight cancer into the world’s largest movement to end the disease. Each year, more than 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities in the United States, along with additional communities in 20 other countries, gather to take part in this global phenomenon and raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer. Thanks to Relay participants, the American Cancer Society continues to save lives.

Thinking Creatively Design Charrette Competition

An Integrated Design Charrette

I recently attended the Thinking Creatively Design Charrette Competition at Kean University. 10 teams of 10 students and their professional leaders ranging from graphic, product, interior, and industrial design were asked to develop an interior environment strategy promoting products sold by a large retail consumer in 3 hours. Each teams concept was presented in front of the competitors in under 2 mins. I was privileged to be part of an amazing and talented team of designers. Great job to all.

Rizco Design and Pantone Goe Hold Water for United Nations Publication

It’s World Water Week in Stockholm – the meeting place for the planet’s most urgent water-related issues! The United Nation’s GoAL WaSH Programme is playing a critical role in educating others about the progress of third-world nations. This group aims to accelerate achievement of the water and sanitation Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) through strategically targeted interventions that strengthen governance of the water and sanitation sectors at appropriate levels. The GoAL WaSH Programme published a 126 + cover, perfect bound book that provides country sector assessments for six countries including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Madagascar, Mali, Paraguay, Sierra Leone and Zambia. Rizco Design was commissioned to handle the design and production for this influential publication.

UNDP

This project was the perfect test for the new Pantone Goe system, which is known for its eco-sensitive properties of utilizing only 10 base inks with no reflex or rhodamine red. The United Nation’s project needed to be environmentally friendly, but also needed to be printed in two days, on two presses and with heavy use of PMS 293 blue – a problem color that typically contributes to offseting and longer drying periods. Rizco Design worked with Giovanni Marra, Pantone’s Director of Sales and Marketing, to accurately convert PMS 293 to a the appropriate Goe equivalent color, 78-1-5.

FSC-Certified, Printech in Stamford, Connecticut was selected to print the project. Owner, Carmine Fursi, took an pro-active role in working with his ink manufacturers to establish ink drawdowns on FSC-Certified Chorus Art #100 Text and Cover. Positive findings prevailed. The aqueous coated areas of the ink drawdown, had very little color variance than non-coated areas – making us comfortable the color matching on press would be rather seamless … and it was. Pressmen, Tony Eberhardt and Don Nemchek worked seamlessly on a 5-color, Heidelberg Speedmaster and 4-color 29” Perfector to lock in densities and match inside text, without issues.
